AION 2 Gladiator: Off-Tank Damage and a Positional Tax
Gladiator is the greatsword off-tank. It tops one-minute dummy parses, drops in live dungeons, and shares a buff that does not stack with Templar.

Gladiator is the off-tank that hits like a damage class. It uses a greatsword, holds the front of the boss, and gives up some party utility to get there.
Its numbers are the clearest example in AION 2 of why a dummy parse is not the whole story.
What Gladiator is
The official Korean class guide lists eight classes, and Gladiator (검성) is one of them. Its main weapon is the greatsword. Both factions can play it.
It is a front-positional melee class. You stand in front of the boss on purpose, and part of your damage depends on staying there.
How Gladiator plays
Two skills carry most of the class.
- Overhead Slam has no cooldown, but it only fires under a condition. Rage Burst opens a window, and the skill also has a flat 7% chance to trigger on any target immune to control, which is every boss.
- Rending Blow is the no-cooldown filler and contributes roughly a quarter of your damage.
Mana is the early friction. Rending Blow eats it fast, so the class feels much smoother once you take the 20-point passive that restores MP on hit. After that, basic attacks stop mattering.
In practice the kit blends into one key. Position in front, hold the chain, and use the gap-closers and utility when the fight moves.
Gladiator against Templar
The two tanks overlap, so the useful question is which one your group needs.
| Gladiator | Templar | |
|---|---|---|
| Damage | Higher average | Lower average, high ceiling |
| Party buff | Life leech on hit | Shields |
| Aggro | Built into the spam attack | Extra passives and taunts |
| Role fit | Alternate tank, more damage | Main tank for hard content |
The party damage buffs are the sharpest difference. Gladiator’s Experience Counterstrike and Templar’s Fury do the same job with different values, and they cannot stack.
Gladiator generates aggro from its own rotation, so it holds the boss whenever no Templar is present. With a Templar in the group, expect to be the second choice for aggro.
How it performs
Creator tracking on the Korea and Taiwan service puts the gap between a dummy and a dungeon in plain numbers.
- On a one-minute dummy parse, Gladiator leads the field: a ceiling near 10.12 million DPS, with the top-25% average around 5.9 million.
- The top five Gladiators all parsed above 9.6 million, over every other class’s ceiling.
- In live dungeons it falls to roughly sixth, just ahead of Templar.
One correction from that video is worth repeating: melee classes have lower floors because positional uptime is never 100%, and ranged classes are the consistent ones.
Gladiator had also been near the top before the latest patch, and stayed in the top two or three outside raids for a long stretch. Balance on the Asian service changes weekly, and global launch on October 5, 2026 reruns it all.
Early build: where the points go first
At level 45 you have a lean point pool, so the passive tree does the heavy lifting.
- Prioritise the frontal damage passive and the general damage passive that also raises defence and accuracy.
- Take the life-absorption passive. It is what lets you hold the front line.
- Take the stacking damage passive as soon as it is available.
- Put most active skills at level eight and raise them later.
Mana stays the early constraint. If you are short of points, gather feathers first and respec after.
On stigmas, pick for survivability and group value rather than raw damage. Daevanion points are tight at this stage too.
One setup note: in tap-target mode the character auto-attacks between skills, so your macro needs fewer auto-attack lines. In action combat mode it stops instead, and the macro has to compensate.
Who should play it
Pick Gladiator if you want to be the front line without giving up your damage numbers. It is also the more forgiving of the two tanks to pick up.
Skip it if you want guaranteed invites to the hardest fights. That is Templar’s niche, and a Templar will always out-aggro you.
The class list has the full roster, and the dungeons page explains what a tank actually does in group content.
